I was sitting in a car with a couple of my friends, one a religious fanatic and the other a hard core scientist. We passed a beautiful field of flowers. My religious friend said, “What a beautiful creation of God.” Immediately my scientific friend says, “They are a bunch of Tiger lilies. They just happen to grow out here.” Then they begin fighting over God and science and who is right and who is wrong. Once again I was caught in the cross-fire between science and religion. Now I was lucky this time and they didn't bring my views into question. However, this has not always been the case. When I have stated my view someone has always called me out told me I had to pick a side. Why can't I believe that God is real and that science are his rules? Is it that hard to believe that God can be a scientific theory?
I know some of you reading this may say, “Yeah, I believe it's possible.” Unfortunately, there are plenty of people in this world that would say, “No way, science and religion are contradictions. You can't have both.” Where is your proof, scientific or religiously, that science and religion contradict each other? So some of the stories in the old testaments don't make scientific sense. Now I know I will get a lot of grief for saying this but many of the stories in the old testaments is myth and second hand. Many people will take that fact and use it to say that the old testament is purely fictional. What kind of fictional story about God put's in a two sentence story about an ox goad that has nothing to do with proof of God. In fact the two sentences are simply “After him came Shamgar son of Anath who killed six hundred of the Philistines with an ox goad. He too delivered Israel.” (NRSV) All this has to do with is Shamgar and Israel. If the old testament was fiction aimed at getting you to believe in God why put something so simple that only speaks of the person? Because it was not originally a story about God it was a written history of Israel.
Some of the very scientific minds will point out the flaws of the old testament such as the story of Jonah. They will say there is no way a person survive in a whales digestive system for long they would be digested easily, so he couldn't have been in the belly of the whale for three days. This proves the old testaments false. Here is what I say to such people. I have been able to hover above the ground . I tell you now that this statement is not false, I truly have hovered above the ground. Now some would say my statements is false, I couldn't have hovered above the ground gravity would have brought me down. The thing is I never said how I hovered or how long I hovered, only that I hovered. Without knowing all the facts you would assume I meant floating in the air for a time. The truth is I have hovered for a a very short time, only a split second. Almost every one has every time they jump. There is a split second when your velocity equals zero and you are “hovering”. The point is the lack of information. The text is believed to be written by Jonah, or his scribe from Jonah's version. If he was in the great fish, how could Jonah known how long he was in the great fish? The text on Jonah also says “great fish”, not whale. Looking further into the text you will see that it never mentions meat in the creatures belly. In fact, it specifically says that he was surrounded by weeds. What whale would eats weeds? Looking at these facts you can make the assumption that not only is it not a whale but that it's digestion system does not contain the same harmful acids a carnivores does. Sure Jonah would have had to eat weeds for 3 days until the fish's stomach realized something was not right an made the fish spit him up. I could go on with the stories that do and don't make sense in the old testaments. However, that would take so much time by the time I am done writing them you will have forgotten what we were talking about and even the fact that you were even reading this.
Even so there is one story in the old testaments that needs to be addressed, the creation. The story of creation is the main rift between science and religion. Is the old testaments right and the world and all the creatures created in seven days or did we evolve to who were are over a course of approximately four billion years and with the story of creation being a lie? But if you look at the information on the original text you will find, that the story of creation was written down almost one thousand years after Adam and Eve. Now isn't that funny, a creation story that coincidentally falls in line with evolution is written down almost a thousand years after the supposed creation. Even though it falls in line with evolution, we must still face the fact that it was the myth of the time that was written down by the author of Genesis.
I know you are probably saying that if the creation is myth is it not possible all the other tales are myths too. The answer is yes, but it is also possible the other tales are true too and that is the point here. It is possible. You can say some of the characters such as Abraham were crazy, blindly taking his only son up the mountain to be sacrificed on the word of some “fictional” god or you could say they had devotion. I have yet to see any proof in all of my research that God is not real. Many will say wars, death, and other such things are all the proof needed to prove God does not exist. That is only proof that God is not involved in the daily life of man. Say you have a child that you have raised. You controlled what they were able to do while you raised them and had set rules. Now they are grown up and on their own. Do you control their every step, their every decision? If you are a good parent then no, they have to learn to do things on there own. If you control their every step they may grow to resent you and then you are shoved off and forgotten. God is like the parent who at a certain time in humanity said you are on your own.
If the radical groups of God and Science accepted it is possible for God to exist in science, then maybe the fights between these two groups would slowly simmer down to almost nonexistent and the two groups would hopefully trickle into more productive areas of their focus. Like helping charities and finding cure, rather then debating each other. You may not be able to see it but there are groups on both sides who only spend there time finding contradictions and use the rest of their time to slander the other side.
So is God contradictory with science? From what I can see the answer is no. In fact science could be God's boundaries. Is God real? That's up to you to decide. All I have to say is that God would fill in one major gap in science. What caused the big bang to happen? Matter can not be created nor destroyed, or so the theory says. If this is true how did the supposed molecule that was here before the big bang. Some major cosmic force must have brought it into being.
